Hundreds of people lived in shanty towns on the moors between Ribblehead and dent Head in the 1870’s as the Midland built its Settle-Carlisle railway – a fast, all weather route by which it might claim its share of the lucrative Scottish traffic. Navvies, carpenters, masons and miners were among those engaged in building a viaduct across Batty Green and driving a tunnel through Blea Moor.
Shanty Life on the Settle-Carlisle Railway is written by W R (Bill) Mitchell a Local author based in Giggleswick, North Yorkshire…Sadly Mr W R Mitchell died in October 2015 – Ref: 18
