The Locomotive Giggleswick: LMS Patriot Class No. 5538
A monograph detailing the history of the LMS ‘Patriot’ Class locomotive named after Giggleswick School in 1938. There is an eight-page central colour section which includes facsimiles of the three Engine History Cards from the archives of the National Railway Museum. There are also over fifty black-and-white photographs of the locomotive from the time of its construction in 1933 up to its withdrawal from BR service in 1962. The development of the ‘Patriot’ Class is first outlined (ironically from an earlier locomotive damaged in an accident on the Settle-Carlisle line); this is followed by chapters tracing the locomotive’s days with the LMS and BR. A final chapter tells the story of the nameplates up to 2003. Contributions from former railwaymen provide additional information and bring the story to life ..Paperback. viii + 56pp. 62 llustrations, 2 charts..Ref: 360
