James Norman Swindlehurst, who was born in 1895, retained vivid memories into old age of life at Brackengarth, one of a string of little farms beside the moor road from Clapham to Bowland Knotts. The author tape recorded his many tales in the 1980’s. Norman recalled when mother, working on her hands and knees, scrubbed the slate floor with hot water and Sunlight soap. He recalled the nightly trimming of the wicks of paraffin lamps, also the periodic cleaning of the chimney with the aid of a holly bush and cart rope. He had much more to tell…Ref: 31
