In 1745 a young man calling himself John Blakey arrived in Wath-on Dearne & obtained work as a labourer. His background was a mystery except that he had quarreled with his relations & resolved never to have anything more to do with them. He married & had five sons. A grandson of John Blakey, with two others, started a business as type founders in 1819, which eventually became known as Stephenson Blake. This book traces the history of this famous South Yorkshire family.

The story of the Blake family was first written by an elderly relative in about 1870. This book is an attempt to fill in some of the missing gaps from the earlier work & to bring the story up to date..
